The Exploration of Lineater Spring - Part 1

Long before Lineater Spring became one of Florida’s most celebrated underwater cave systems, it was an unknown mystery hidden beneath the Suwannee River. In August 1981, what began as a simple conversation with a park ranger led to a groundbreaking discovery by explorers Guy Bryant and Lee Sams. Their dive into the spring revealed a vast, untouched labyrinth that would soon captivate the cave diving community. This story recounts the early days of that discovery — the challenges, the strong currents, and the thrill of laying the first lines in what would later become one of the state’s most extensive underwater cave systems.

The Exploration of Lineater Spring - Part 2

Following the initial discovery and exploration of Lineater Spring, the adventure continued with the search for its hidden connections beneath the surrounding forest. As debris within the cave hinted at unseen openings above, curiosity led to a meeting with a 92-year-old landowner named Burnice Warner — whose kindness and a simple request for catfish opened the door to a new chapter in the system’s exploration. What began with a handshake and a cooler of fish soon evolved into the discovery of multiple new sinkholes — Burnice, Tyre, Window, Pain, Tight, and Gulemar — each revealing more of the vast underwater labyrinth below. This story captures the excitement, determination, and camaraderie that defined the early days of exploration at Lineater Spring.

The Exploration of the Sumps of Climax Cave

In the mid-1970s, the thrill of discovery led a small group of explorers — including Guy Bryant, Court Smith, and legendary diver Sheck Exley — deep beneath the clay and limestone of Georgia’s Climax Cave. What began as a muddy crawl through tight, twisting passages soon evolved into a daring series of sump dives that pushed the limits of early cave exploration. With minimal equipment, persistence, and a sense of adventure that defined a generation of cave divers, they ventured into submerged tunnels few had ever seen. The Sumps of Climax Cave recounts these formative explorations — blending grit, ingenuity, and the pure curiosity that drives all true exploration underground.
